Overview

The new millennia witnessed a long-awaited demand getting fulfilled when Uttarakhand was carved out of the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh to restore historical importance of this highly spiritual and reverential landscape.

Known as Kedarkhand in Hindu theology, it remained inhospitable to humans for aeons and considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Whose presence can still be felt as the landscape is strewn with multiple shrines (Panch Kedar) dedicated to Him. The shrines of Jageshwar and Kedarnath Dham, represents different forms of the lord Shiva and referred as Kashi(s) of north.

Uttarakhand with its unique geography, ethnicity, language, culture and traditions remained loggerhead with Uttar Pradesh till its separation. Hence, the war for separate state that was legitimised on above parameters was waged right after the independence in 1947. This part of erstwhile state Uttar Pradesh was treated like a step-child.
